Audi A1 – Spark plugs, lambda sensors and CTAS-T sensors
NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Limited is to supply spark plugs and Lambda sensors for the best-selling engines used to power the Audi A1, voted What Car? magazine’s Supermini of the Year and Car of the Year in 2011.
The Audi A1 1.4 L TFSI is the top version of the premium small car. Equipped with a turbo charger and super charger, it delivers 185HP while consuming a modest 5.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. Inside the engine, a PZFR6R8EG spark plug from NGK guarantees efficient ignition. It was developed from the PZFR6R, which has been powering the EA111 engine family from the Volkswagen Group for many years.
Just like its predecessor, the PZFR6R8EG was exclusively designed for Volkswagen/Audi. It features a laser-welded platinum tip on the centre electrode as well as a platinum chip on the ground electrode, thus making the plug virtually resistant against spark erosion.
The information required by the engine control unit of many A1 models to level the ratio of fuel and air is supplied by NTK Lambda sensors.
The 1.2-litre TFSI engine and the 1.6-litre TDI engine (105HP) both come with wideband sensors of the second generation, or ZFAS-U2, as regulating sensor.
As a diagnostic sensor, the 1.2-litre TFSI uses a zirconium dioxide sensor, or OZAS-S2, that has a light-off time of just 8 seconds and boasts excellent measurement accuracy.
To monitor exhaust temperatures within the 1.6-litre TDI engine’s exhaust stream, Audi additionally chose NTK’s CTAS-T sensor. This is the third generation of NTK temperature sensors. It covers a wide temperature range from 100-900°C and features a very slim, ceramic sensor element to ensure an exceptionally short light-off time and precise measuring results.
